Ink drawing of Hapu’u Fern for Inktober Laulima style

I drew Hapu’u Ferns for Inktober day 8. Using Laulima Hawaii’s prompt list.

I only drew the leaves here in this piece, so you can’t really tell what a large fern Hapu’u is. These fern trees can grow up to 30 ft tall! From my memory, they are also very hairy plants. The fronds are covered in what looks like orangutan fur. My Popo had many ferns in her garden. She used the fibrous Hapu’u trunks to plant orchids.

We had a Hapu’u planted near our lanai when we moved into our home. It eventually reached the roof and we got rid of it. Then, little fire ants became a problem here on Oahu and lots of people lost their Hapu’u, including at my parents house. Now I regret losing mine – they are harder to replace and you just don’t see them anymore. Ants drive me crazy though, so maybe it’s better this way.

I am using this photo from LoveBigIsland.com. They have a great informational post on Hapu’u – Click this caption to check it out.
  • Inktober day 7: STARFISH | Brittle Star ink drawings

Inktober day 7: STARFISH | Brittle Star ink drawings

I drew a Brittle Star for Inktober day 7. The prompt is STARFISH.

I remember seeing Brittle Stars a lot when I was younger. Not just at the aquarium field trips, but also at the tidepools at the beach.

At a Drink and Draw evening with my buddies a few month’s back, I drew another of these guys.

I used my LAMY Safari pen with Noodler’s Bulletproof Black. I also used an ink wash of Kaweco Pearl Black.

Did you see yesterday’s post about my “Deer in the Moonlights” drawing? I forgot to send a newsletter about it so you may have missed it. Check it out here!

  • Ink & Watercolor Mamaki for day 2 of Inktober

Ink & Watercolor Mamaki for day 2 of Inktober

Today’s drawing is of Mamaki (Pipturus albidus). It’s a native Hawaiian plant that is used in lāʻau lapaʻau (traditional medicine practices). It’s known to help with digestive problems, skin ailments, and respiratory conditions among other things. Plus, I learned a new-to-me fact about Mamaki while doing some reference searching on Google. It is also helpful in treating Dementia! (source) I know it’s popular as a brewed tea, so I went out and bought some for my mom. Our family member has dementia, and was coming over to visit today. Hopefully they can share some tea 🖤

This plant once existed in my yard, just like the Koa from yesterday’s post. I think it dried out completely one hot summer when I wasn’t watering enough. Sigh. It had really big, deep green leaves with purple veins. Due to my organic & lazy gardening practices, the leaves always had stuff on them so I rarely made tea.

This drawing came together pretty quickly. Which I’m grateful for, because I had a busy day!! I used my favorite waterproof hot pink ink to make this drawing. It’s called Noodler’s Ink Bulletproof Rachmaninoff. I always use a LAMY Safari fountain pen. I used my trusty watercolors to add the greens and yellows. And I relined it with hot pink watercolor to finish it up!

I hope you like it! Tomorrow’s post will be about today’s plant in Laulima Hawaii’s prompt list, the Pua Kala. I’ve never even heard of this flower before but I already love the look of it. Subscribe to my email list so you don’t miss my next post.
