Hi 🖤 This watercolor portrait was painted as part of a Sktchy.com class taught by Jordan Rhodes

We began this class by using a color wash of blue to set the tone. You can see it peeking through the highlights. The class then continues to place layer after layer of washes. For me, I had to use a heat gun to dry the page between layers so my paper wouldn’t get too warped. What I really liked was how Jordan used sharp angles and bold cut lines to create shapes and shadows. A lot of watercolor art is so soft, and that’s great. But his style gets an entirely different effect. You should check out his art because my piece doesn’t have that effect at all. Mine gets the usual blendy softness of watercolor – but I’m still proud of it.

Hey, so this one is also very cool because my daughter did one as well. We both did the Sktchy class together. So here is her piece alongside mine, she was almost 10 years old at the time. It looks so good!

I’ve also applied a lot of these same layering techniques to digital art in ProCreate by using a new layer for each color and lowering the opacity. Doing that along with clipping masks can give very satisfying results! Mess around!

Please scroll through my portrait posts below. Only some of them have notes, but I’m trying to add more. I’m mainly just posting these to get the images to scroll in this fancy carousel here…
