Hawaiian Botanical Illustrations in my sketchbook

I’m gearing up for an event in early May. I get to draw botanical type things, live, in front of people! Here are some of my warm-up illustrations.

The first illustration is Kokiสปo สปulaสปula. It’s an endangered, endemic Hawaiian plant. I had a plant once (that came with a red tag) and it’s flowers were so tiny and delicate. Unfortunately, the aphids tended this plant more than I did and they took it over. I hate when I go through periods of neglect and lose things that I really like.

I haven’t had much success with hibiscus in my yard. My neighbor on the other hand has beautiful plants, taller than the fence! They are constantly blooming in different shades from orange to pink to red! They are an introduced variety that is grown more popularly here in Hawaii. AND, he’s happy to spray his plants with chemicals. Which I don’t do, so all the bugs just hop on over the fence and enjoy my organic garden. I could go on about the hours I spend blasting aphids of my plants with jet streams of water…

The second illustration includes non-native Honohono orchids (Dendrobium anosmum). They smell SOOOOO freaking good right now. It seems like lots of people in my neighborhood grow these as well as coconut orchids. I can smell them everywhere as I walk the dog or jog around.

Also drawn are native Hawaiian Wiliwili flowers in two shades. Not currently blooming, but always fascinating, I love coming across these trees on hikes. They drop all their leaves before blooming, so the flower bunches brightly contrast the dark branches. Like hibiscus they can range in colors. From from green to white to yellow, corals and reds. I hope to catch some late this summer!

Things I made for Drawlloween 2024

I enjoyed participating in Mab’s Drawlloween Club once again this year. It’s an annual event that provides drawing prompts for each day in October, hosted by Mab Graves. I also tried to do most of the art in ink so I could use the Inktober hastag as well. Here’s a sort of summary of what I made 8)))

    Day 1 | If I Were a Shapeshifter…

๐Ÿ–ค I drew my version of Moโ€™o – A Hawaiian lizard-like spirit who can shapeshift from beautiful maiden to water dragon or even house gecko. They are often found lurking in local pools and waterways. I like to imagine this Mo’o in a flower filled plunge pool at the bottom of a waterfall.

    Day 2 | (Young) Frankenstein

    Day 3 | Vampire

You guys โ€ฆ I lost the likeness of this #Vampire so badly โ€ฆ This one was a struggle…

Day 4 | Faun (Mr. Tumnus)

Another little 5″x7″ ink art ๐Ÿ–ค I’m happy for prompts so I don’t have to waste time thinking about who/what/why to draw

    Day 5 | (Worst) Witch

I painted a little Worst Witch aka Fairuza Balk ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ–ค Iโ€™m pretty proud of how it came out! This movie was one of my FAVES growing up along with everything else she was in. Tim Curry bonus!

    Day 6 | (Aloha) Bones

    Day 7 | Alien

I chose to draw this Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle for todayโ€™s Alien prompt. CRB are alien to our Hawaiian islands, damaging swaths of coconut trees, leaving death in their wake. I made it look cute tho cuz bugs are rad where they belong ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Day 8 | Grimm

I chose to draw the tall oak that held โ€˜the MOONโ€™ before everyone gets greedy in this Grimm tale.

    Day 9 | Goblin

Itโ€™s Gizmo! and Stripe! and 3 random faces from the Museum app that are definitely NOT goblins. Is a gremlin even a goblin? Time to go be a beach goblin ๐Ÿ‘น

    Day 10 | Black Lagoon

    Day 11 | Siren

    Stay a while and listen.

    Day 12 | Reaper

Made a fun little digital guy today! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ–ค He looks happy to be out collecting for the Halloween season ๐ŸŽƒ

Day 13 | Yokai (Ninmenju in bloom)

Ninmenju is a strange old tree that bears flowers and fruits that resemble human heads.

    Day 14 | Undead

This Undead Cutie isnโ€™t quite finished but my time is up โ€ฆ for drawing today ๐Ÿ’€ Perhaps Iโ€™ll add even more undead to it another time ๐Ÿฅ€ Also we donโ€™t have to talk about why the one leg hasnโ€™t decomposedโ€ฆ /shrug

    Day 15 | Haunted Forest

I really like looking at everyoneโ€™s drawings of haunted/enchanted forests. I yearn to be able to create a really dreamy, misty feel in my arts. Not there yet ๐Ÿ˜ž Have to practice more. But, I will say that this mixed media piece is better than the forests Iโ€™ve drawn before so I guess Iโ€™m getting somewhere ๐Ÿ‘ป

I think thatโ€™s my favorite bit about the October drawing challenges – it forces me to work on things I wish I was better at.

    Day 16  | Moon ๐ŸŒ™

    Also included Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS)

    Day 20 | Cat Creature

    Tatzelwurm

    Day 21 | Green Lady

One of my favorite places is the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens. So much shade and color!

There is a rumor that the Green Lady haunts this Garden, looking for children to steal. Not gonna lie, the bridge there freaks me out and weโ€™ve heard strange drums echoing from down the stairs in the deeper parts.

We still take the kids there all the time and tell creepy stories ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜€

    Day 22 | Botanical Beast

๐Ÿ–ค One version of a Hawaiian legend describes the volcano goddess Pele’s love for a great warrior named ‘Ohi’a. But, ‘Ohi’a was in love with Lehua, and refused Pele’s offer of marriage. Pele was furious and turned the handsome warrior into a twisted tree. The gods take pity on a heartbroken Lehua, and return her to ‘Ohi’a as a flower. The legend says that if you pick a Lehua blossom from an ‘Ohi’a tree, it will rain. The separated lovers are crying once again.๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ–ค

    Day 24 | Goth Moth

I was trying to make black lace – itโ€™s got sort of a paisley bandana feel to it. I still like it.

    Day 28 | Dragon

My daughter was born in the year of the Black Water Dragon. These are a fave to imagine and draw. ๐Ÿ–ค

    Day 30 | Ghost

  • Day 2 | Witch | October Daily Drawing Challenge

Day 2 | Witch | October Daily Drawing Challenge

    Love that Inky sheen….

This was supposed to be a ‘Witch’. I searched up the prompt on the Museum app (Sktchy inspiration) and found a super cute and creepy photo. Somehow my drawing changed into it’s own thing. It really reminds me of the Instagram user Tomatosita ‘s stuff. I’m a big fan. I must have been channeling those things that I love about their drawings. More of them here.

I should really try and copy some masters. I guess it’s easier if those masters are dead and gone and can no longer make anything for themselves. Or if those great master-pieces are so well known that it’s obviously just a copy to hone your skill or hang on your own wall. If I straight up just start copying some modern artists style – that just seems wrong. Honestly though, this kinda just came out this way. The algorithm hasn’t even shown me their art in a LONG time. I’ll have to go make some likes on their account again so it pops back up in my feed.

Anyways – I still like this drawing a lot. Even though it’s a rip-off (LOL) and NOT a witch, really.
