Hi 🖤 This watercolor portrait was painted as part of a Sktchy.com class taught by Jordan Rhodes

We began this class by using a color wash of blue to set the tone. You can see it peeking through the highlights. The class then continues to place layer after layer of washes. For me, I had to use a heat gun to dry the page between layers so my paper wouldn’t get too warped. What I really liked was how Jordan used sharp angles and bold cut lines to create shapes and shadows. A lot of watercolor art is so soft, and that’s great. But his style gets an entirely different effect. You should check out his art because my piece doesn’t have that effect at all. Mine gets the usual blendy softness of watercolor – but I’m still proud of it.

Hey, so this one is also very cool because my daughter did one as well. We both did the Sktchy class together. So here is her piece alongside mine, she was almost 10 years old at the time. It looks so good!

I’ve also applied a lot of these same layering techniques to digital art in ProCreate by using a new layer for each color and lowering the opacity. Doing that along with clipping masks can give very satisfying results! Mess around!

Hi! Thanks for viewing this post 🖤 This ink wash portrait was done with a photo reference I found online @ Flickr by AndrewFPhoto.

I basically just copied the photo straight-up as some practice for ink wash technique. High contrast black and white photos are the easiest to work with for this style of ink portrait. I begin with a detailed pencil sketch, lightly lining out the areas of heavy shadows and bright highlights. Using a light wash, I start to build the face. Avoid all highlight areas ~ those will remain as empty paper. Continue using darker washes to build the shadows that add depth and character to the face. The final step is going in the darkest areas of the reference with heavy black ink. That’s when the image finally pops! 🖤 OR, when you spill the ink or leave a smudge 🤣

Day 2 | Witch | October Daily Drawing Challenge

    Love that Inky sheen….

This was supposed to be a ‘Witch’. I searched up the prompt on the Museum app (Sktchy inspiration) and found a super cute and creepy photo. Somehow my drawing changed into it’s own thing. It really reminds me of the Instagram user Tomatosita ‘s stuff. I’m a big fan. I must have been channeling those things that I love about their drawings. More of them here.

I should really try and copy some masters. I guess it’s easier if those masters are dead and gone and can no longer make anything for themselves. Or if those great master-pieces are so well known that it’s obviously just a copy to hone your skill or hang on your own wall. If I straight up just start copying some modern artists style – that just seems wrong. Honestly though, this kinda just came out this way. The algorithm hasn’t even shown me their art in a LONG time. I’ll have to go make some likes on their account again so it pops back up in my feed.

Anyways – I still like this drawing a lot. Even though it’s a rip-off (LOL) and NOT a witch, really.
